Toy Fox Terrier Puppies for Sale

Overview: A very playful and energetic dog, the Toy Fox Terrier is very affectionate towards its master and family. It gets along well with other dogs and pets, but it doesn't have a lot of love towards strangers. It is very accepting of training which makes it quite easy to teach. It can make an excellent watchdog, however it lacks when it comes to protection skills. Grooming this dog is quite easy and doesn't need much when it comes to taking care of its coat. It doesn’t stand up against cold weather very well, but it feels comfortable in warm climates.

Temperament: This breed was used for hunting, and as such it is excitable and feisty. It can spend hours outside just exploring both inside and outside so it is recommended that it lives in safe environments. While it does love to play with people, it doesn't do well around people who don't know limits to play, such as small children who can annoy the dog. It enjoys showing off to people, however it is doesn't like strangers right away and will need to get to know them first.

History: A long time favorite among farmers and pet owners has been the Smooth Fox Terrier. Farmers in the United States found the smaller dogs of the litters to be better for catching rodents and entertaining as well as having around the house. During the early 20th century the smaller of these were mixed with toy breeds including the Toy Manchester Terrier, Chihuahua, and perhaps the Italian Greyhound. The end result was a smaller version of the Smooth Fox Terrier with a few differences. This newer version was still known by the UKC as such until around 1936 when it was given a new name and separated from the Smooth Fox Terrier as a different breed. The Toy Fox Terrier was considered to be easier to live with than the original with still having the same traits that drew people to the Smooth Fox Terrier. The Toy Fox Terrier was known as one of the most popular non-AKC registered breeds in the country until 2003 when it entered its first show.

Names: The Toy Fox Terrier is also known as the American Toy Terrier and the Amertoy.

Groups: The Toy Fox Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2003 and assigned to the Toy Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average adult Toy Fox Terrier can be 8.5 to 11 inches in height and can weigh between 3.5 and 7 lb. with no difference between the genders. Its athletic appearance displays strength, agility, and grace. It has a lithe muscular figure with smooth outlines that are elegant. The coat is short, shiny and satin looking in texture.

Care: This breed needs not only a lot of attention, but a lot of things to do. It needs to exercise both the mind and the body on a daily basis or it will start to act in a destructive way. A warm, soft bed is appreciated by the Toy Fox Terrier. It is best to make it wear a sweater and even earmuffs when exposed to very cold weather. Though it enjoys outside play time, it should never be made to live outdoors.
