Kerry Blue Terrier Puppies for Sale

Overview: The Kerry Blue Terrier is a very protective dog that loves its owner and loves to play. However, it doesn't get along well with other dogs and pets and doesn't like the presence of strangers. This breed has a large amount of energy and also needs to have exercise to use up that energy. It is hard to train but it does have exceptional watchdog and protection capabilities if trained properly. With abundant hair, the Kerry Blue Terrier needs a lot of grooming. It can resist both cold and hot weather relatively well.

Temperament: The Kerry Blue Terrier needs daily physical exercise and games that keep it active. An open area to play is recommended as it loves to run, explore, play around and dig. This breed is well mannered when it lives indoors. It will protect against people it doesn't know but will willingly accept friends with excitement. The Kerry Blue Terrier may enjoy barking.

History: Originating in the south and west of Ireland this breed was first noticed in the Ring of Kerry during the 18th century. This dog was used for at least a century for hunting small animals and birds both on land and in the water as well as being used to herd sheep and other animals. The reasons this breed wasn't noticed outside of Ireland for such a long period is still unexplained. Since the early 20th Century it is accepted in both the English and United States shows. Once the Kerry Blue Terrier was groomed it became one of the best looking dogs in the shows and gained in popularity. The oddity of the breed is that it is born black but as it grows older the black is replaced with a blue hue. The Kerry Blue Terrier is still used to this day as everything it was bred to do and now it serves as a police dog.

Names: The Kerry Blue Terrier is also known to some as the Irish Blue Terrier.

Groups: The Kerry Blue Terrier was formally recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1922 and assigned to the Terrier Group.

Physical Characteristics: The average Kerry Blue Terrier can be between 17.5 to 19.5 inches in height and can weigh 33 to 40 lb. This breed has a well developed and muscular body with good balance. The coat will be dense and wavy yet soft to the touch. The colors that are on the coat can be any shade of blue with or without black points. There may also be a small white patch on the chest.

Care: This breed needs either a very long walk or an opportunity to play in a large area daily in order to expend its energy. It can live outdoors in appropriate climates but it would live best inside with people around. The Kerry Blue Terrier needs to be groomed about twice a week with trimming every month. During the puppy stage, the ears need to be taped while it is still developing to maintain a proper shape.
