Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Puppies for Sale
Overview: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is and has been for centuries years, almost exclusively, a companion dog. Highly affectionate toward its family and friendly toward other pets, except other dogs, this breed is the personification of the lap dog. It loves to play, and can serve as a watchdog, although it is friendly to strangers, too. This breed has a fair amount of energy which needs to be burned off with some daily exercise.
Temperament: This lively, loving spaniel breed is gentle, sweet natured, quiet and has a heart desiring to please. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is very receptive to training and enjoys exploring outside, chasing and games. As a companion dog, it is an excellent, even-tempered house pet. It also does very well as a therapy dog and achieves high marks in competitions for obedience, conformation and agility.
History: For centuries, small spaniel breed lap dogs have been featured in art works, especially in aristocratic families of England. Non-working dogs were a luxury that the working class could ill afford, so the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was owned almost exclusively by those of the upper class. King Charles II of England was very partial to the progenitors of the current day Cavalier. It has been said that he would rather have played with this dogs than attend to affairs of state. As years passed, the preference in breeding resulted in a shorter nosed variety. Interestingly, early in the 20th Century, a wealthy American wanted to rekindle interest in the older, longer nosed version. He offered generous prize money to those who would breed the best old style Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This motivated breeders to bring back the original type which has become more popular, especially in England.
Names: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known exclusively by that name.
Groups: The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a member of the American Kennel Club Toy Group and was so recognized in 1995.
Physical Characteristics: Built like a small version of a working spaniel, this breed has moderate bone structure, is a bit longer than its height with a medium length silky coat. Around its feet is the unique feathering of hair. The Cavalier King Spaniel stands only about 12 to 11 inches high and weighs only 13 to 18 lb. There are four varieties of colors: blenheim, ruby, tricolor, black and tan.
Care: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are indoor dogs. They can play outside in an enclosed, safe area and go for leashed walks, but should be kept inside otherwise. They are not particularly tolerant of heat and don’t appreciate colder weather. Daily exercise and brushing its coat several times per week are very important to the health and happiness of this breed.
